STRUCTURAL–PRAGMATIC REGULARITIES OF THE USE OF QUESTION WORDS IN ECHO QUESTIONS

Pragmatics is the study of reference is essentially a pragmatic theme: the focus is on how speakers establish various types of linkage between their utterances and elements in a situational context (e.g. objects, persons, etc.).

Pragmatics distinguishes two intents or meanings in each utterance or communicative act of verbal communication. One is the informative intent or the sentence meaning, and the other – the communicative intent or the speaker's meaning ( D.Sperber and W.Wilson , 1986). The ability to comprehend and produce a communicative act is referred to as pragmatic competence which often includes one's knowledge about the social distance, social status between the speakers involved, the cultural knowledge such as politeness, and the linguistic knowledge, both explicit and implicit [5, p.179] .

Echo questions have the following typical characteristics: they relate to a previous utterance, and are similar to it in form and meaning (hence the term “echo”); they inform the interlocutor that the speaker has misperceived part of the previous utterance or refuses to accept it, reveal a great abundance of feelings, the author's inner world and highlight misunderstanding and all obscure passages. The main function of echo-utterances is questioning or objecting to part of the interlocutor’s utterance [3, p.98].

The topicality of the research is stipulated by the absence of a systematic analysis of the properties of echo questions which serve a specific attitudinal markers referring to the pragmatic plane of literary discourse.

Literary discourse is a specific ensemble of ideas, concepts that are produced, reproduced, and transformed in a particular set of (institutional) practices through which meaning is given to physical and social realities [1,p.6].

As the main topic of the investigation are echo questions, we studied what question words are used in the echo questions:

· What:

"Nicolas Flamel ," she whispered dramatically, "is the only known maker of the Sorcerer's Stone!" This didn't have quite the effect she'd expected.

"The what ?" said Harry and Ron.

"Oh, honestly, don't you two read? Look -- read that, there." [4, p.137]

· Where:

“The thing is , I had an operation very recently”.

“Yeah? Where ?”

“On my wuddayacallit – my clavichord”.

“Yeah? Where the hell’s that?”

“The clavichord?” I said. “Well, actually, it’s in the spinal canal. I mean it’s quite a ways down in the spinal canal”. [2, p.113]

· Who:

“Well, you don’t know me, but I’m a friend of Eddie Birdsell’s .”

Who ? You’re a friend of who ?”

“Eddie Birdsell ? From Pinceton ?” I said.

You could tell she was running the name over in her mind and all.

“ Birdsell , Birdsell … from Princeton … Princeton College ?” [2, p.78]

· Why:

“You don’t like anything that’s happening”.

“Yes I do. Yes I do. Sure I do. Don’t say that. Why the hell do you say that?”

“Because you don’t. You don’t like any schools. You don’t like a million things. You don’t”.

“I do! That’s where you’re wrong – that’s exactly where you’re wrong! Why the hell do you have to say that?”

“Because you don’t”, she said. [2, p.193]

· Which:

Which museum?”

“I don’t know. The museum.”

“I know, but the one where the pictures are, or the one where the Indians are?”

“The one where the Indians” [2, p.138]

· How:

“Holden Caulfield. How are ya ?”

“Holden! I’m fine! How are you?”

“Swell. How are ya , anyway? I mean how’s school ?” [2, p.123]

Thus we may conclude that the most wide spread are echo questions with the question word “what?” (70%) on the second place is “who?” (15 ,7 %) then come the other question words that are seldom used “where?”, “how?” and “why?” (4 ,3 % each) and the least used is “which?” (1 ,4 %). Having already stated that the speaker is most interested in the object of speaking we must admit that it can be found out with the help of such question words as “what?” and “who?” that is why they are most commonly used question words.
